The Israeli Ministry of Defense has signed a substantial procurement contract with U.S.-based AM General to acquire a large fleet of Humvees and associated spare parts. Funded through U.S. military assistance, the deal is worth 500 million shekels (around $150 million), with the first deliveries expected to begin later this year.
According to Israeli news source Ynet, the vehicles will be supplied to the IDF Ground Forces to replace combat assets worn down by prolonged military engagements in Gaza over the past two years. The new Humvees are also seen as part of a broader strategy to strengthen Israel’s military preparedness for upcoming regional threats.
Designed for high mobility and adaptability, the Humvees ordered by Israel are specially outfitted to carry more than ten troops, facilitate the evacuation of multiple casualties, and deliver enhanced firepower. This makes them well-suited for a variety of battlefield roles, from tactical transport to combat support.
While the Humvee has played a vital role in U.S. military operations for decades, it is gradually being phased out in favor of the more advanced JLTVs. Israel has similarly begun integrating JLTVs into its defense inventory. In 2023, the IDF procured 75 JLTVs through a foreign military sale and expanded its fleet with additional units purchased directly from the manufacturer. Another order was placed in November 2024, although the exact number of vehicles has not been disclosed.
