Lockheed Martin has secured a $52-million US Army contract to provide long-term support for the HIMARS and MLRS launchers, two of the service’s most critical rocket artillery systems. The deal includes maintenance, configuration updates, operational support, and management of repair parts and distribution services. All contracted work will be executed in Grand Prairie, Texas, and is scheduled to finish by May 2031.

The HIMARS and MLRS platforms are pivotal to the Army’s evolving Long-Range Precision Fires strategy, which aims to deliver enhanced accuracy and extended reach through advanced weapons like the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM). Both launchers share a common munitions suite, including standard and extended-range GMLRS rockets, enabling flexible deployment and powerful precision strikes across varied conflict environments.

While sharing ammunition compatibility, the systems offer distinctly different battlefield roles. HIMARS is wheeled, highly mobile, and transportable by aircraft, lending itself to fast-moving operations and constrained terrain. The MLRS, with its tracked chassis and armored protection, is tailored for sustained engagements and high-intensity combat zones where heavier firepower and survivability are critical.

The rising popularity of HIMARS on the global stage reflects its proven combat success in Ukraine, operational reliability in Middle Eastern campaigns, and strategic utility in Indo-Pacific security missions. Countries such as Australia, Bahrain, Canada, and Estonia have all placed new orders this year, underscoring the launcher’s growing role in modern defense planning.
