On Thursday, U.S. authorities announced their approval for a major $4.67 billion military sale to Egypt, involving the advanced NASAMS air defense system and associated support services. Having been deployed effectively in Ukraine to defend against Russian attacks, the NASAMS provides cutting-edge surface-to-air missile coverage and is expected to significantly strengthen Egypt’s ability to respond to a range of aerial threats.

According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), this proposed arms transfer is aimed at equipping Egypt to handle both present and future security challenges by upgrading its detection and engagement capabilities. Moreover, the DSCA emphasized that this transaction will help advance American foreign policy and national security by enabling Egypt—a key non-NATO ally—to continue its role as a stabilizing force and a proponent of economic progress in the Middle East.

While the U.S. State Department has given its preliminary approval, the sale is not yet final. The DSCA has forwarded the necessary notification to Congress, which still needs to review and approve the agreement before it can be executed.
