WASS has signed a ₹1,896 crore contract to provide 48 Black Shark Advanced torpedoes for the Indian Navy’s six Kalvari-class submarines, marking a significant upgrade in underwater combat capabilities. Developed to offer superior propulsion, guidance, and countermeasure resistance, the BSA torpedo is operational with multiple navies and adaptable across various submarine classes. Deliveries are set between April 2028 and early 2030. The contract includes technology transfer and co-production, promoting domestic expertise in propulsion, electronics, and warhead systems while advancing India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat defense goals. This acquisition strengthens the Indian Navy’s underwater deterrence, enhancing both stealth attack potential and long-term fleet interoperability for future conventional and nuclear-powered submarines.
