Varjo, the Finland-based mixed reality innovator, has launched a new series of XR-4 headsets specifically engineered for military simulation and defense training. The latest additions — the XR-4 Secure Edition and XR-4 Focal Edition — extend the company’s growing portfolio of professional-grade MR devices designed to support mission rehearsal and tactical training across multiple environments.

The new headsets feature advanced optical sensors, improved comfort for extended use, and configurations cleared for deployment in secure and radio-restricted facilities. Additional upgrades include autofocus passthrough cameras, superior low-light imaging for nocturnal operations, and ruggedized housing for use in demanding field conditions.

Varjo stated that the XR-4 series enables defense operators to train within blended virtual and real-world settings, providing greater immersion and operational realism. Fully compatible with current aviation, naval, and armored vehicle simulators, the systems enhance mission effectiveness while reducing reliance on traditional, high-cost simulation setups.

Globally, armed forces are rapidly incorporating mixed and extended reality solutions into their training programs. The U.S. Army employs Varjo’s XR-3 as part of its collective virtual training framework for helicopter crews, while in Europe, militaries such as the Finnish Air Force have integrated MR into hybrid flight training systems. Elsewhere, Czech-developed MR simulators are being used to help Ukrainian pilots gain experience on F-16 fighter jets, underscoring the growing strategic value of immersive technologies in defense training.
