At Groton’s Naval Submarine Base New London, the US Navy marked the official commissioning of USS Iowa (SSN 797), the 24th vessel of the Virginia-class fast attack submarines fleet. Delivered in January as part of a major multi-billion-dollar construction contract for nine additional SSNs, USS Iowa embodies the latest advancements in submarine design and mission readiness.

Virginia-class submarines like the Iowa boast state-of-the-art sonar, advanced propulsion systems, and flexible payload space, enabling a diverse set of assignments from covert surveillance to high-intensity strike missions. This latest commissioning bolsters the operational strength and strategic reach of the submarine force, increasing fleet agility and resilience against current and future threats across global maritime theaters.
