General Dynamics Electric Boat has selected QinetiQ US for subcontracts totaling $26 million to supply advanced systems for the US Navy’s Virginia- and Columbia-class submarines. QinetiQ will handle manufacturing, testing, and delivery of key electrical and electromechanical components at its domestic facilities.
The Virginia-class fast attack submarines are a central part of the Navy’s modernization efforts, replacing the older Los Angeles-class. They are built for high-speed missions involving enemy engagement, surveillance, and special ops, boasting over 25 knots of speed and armed with Tomahawk missiles and Mk 48 torpedoes. More than 20 are already in service, and General Dynamics recently received an additional $1.85 billion for future production phases.
On the other hand, the Columbia-class submarines will succeed the Ohio-class in providing nuclear deterrence. These massive vessels, still under construction, will feature stealth capabilities, electric-drive propulsion, and carry Trident II D5 (LE) missiles and MK48 torpedoes. Each submarine will measure 171 meters in length and operate at speeds exceeding 20 knots.
