BAE Systems has signed a research and development pact with the U.S. Army to support the evolution of the M109-52 self-propelled howitzer. The agreement, established with DEVCOM-AC, is designed to fast-track the prototype’s development process.

This variant upgrades the current M109A7 model with Rheinmetall’s 155mm, 52-caliber L52 cannon. It has gained attention as a possible alternative after the U.S. Army discontinued the Extended Range Cannon Artillery initiative due to performance limitations with its 58-caliber design.

The M109-52 is expected to play a central role in meeting future long-range artillery demands.
