Skydio has secured two initial multi-million-dollar contracts from the US Air Force to accelerate the rollout of small unmanned aircraft systems across key operational units. The agreements will supply Skydio X10D drones to Air Combat Command organizations, where Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) specialists will employ them for real-time reconnaissance, improved battlefield awareness, and resilient communications support. Operating alongside ground combat units, TACPs depend on precise situational input to identify targets and direct airpower—making the enhanced visibility offered by the drones a major operational advantage.
The drones will also bolster the capabilities of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units, which require rapid and safe methods to assess potential threats both during routine base activities and deployed missions. The Air Force expects further deliveries over the next 18 months, expanding access to flexible unmanned systems that reduce risk and increase mission efficiency.
Beyond combat missions, the Air Force has steadily broadened its adoption of drones for security, inspection, and base operations. Security forces are already using Skydio platforms for perimeter monitoring and protection of critical installations. Meanwhile, at Travis AFB, the 60th Maintenance Group has implemented the Air Force’s first drone-based aircraft inspection program for the C-17 fleet. The initiative has significantly shortened inspection cycles while reducing the need for personnel to work at height, supporting the service’s wider modernization strategy aimed at improving readiness and maintenance safety.
