Thales and BAE Systems have entered a fresh phase in their cooperation to strengthen the UK’s undersea warfare capabilities. Building on more than two decades of joint work, the two defense giants will collaborate on next-generation submarine sonar technologies. The project is intended to improve the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet with modernized sonar delivered under a model that shortens deployment timelines. Thales has already played a key role in providing sonar for the UK’s anti-submarine frigates, including the Type 23 and Type 26 classes.
The initiative adds to Thales’ string of recent projects in support of UK defense modernization. Earlier this month, the company teamed with Autonomous Devices to unveil EW-UAS1, a drone-based electronic warfare system. The platform combines a Thales-developed payload with a drone offering long endurance and agile maneuverability, enhancing electronic warfare options for future operations.
Thales has also joined forces with L3Harris to create a short-range air defense command and control solution, further diversifying its contributions to British military capabilities. Additionally, the Royal Navy took delivery in March of the first of four unmanned minehunting vessels developed by Thales. The 12-meter vessel incorporates AI technology to automatically detect and classify targets, operating autonomously or by remote command. Together, these projects highlight how Thales continues to expand its role in the UK’s maritime and broader defense sectors.
