The UK and Germany have formalized a £52-million joint artillery procurement deal, marking a significant step in enhancing long-range firepower and operational mobility for NATO forces. The agreement centers on the RCH 155 wheeled artillery system, which is designed to deliver precision fires beyond 70 kilometers while remaining fully mobile on the battlefield.

As part of the program, the UK will receive an early prototype RCH 155, while Germany will host two additional platforms for comprehensive joint testing. Defense officials said the collaboration will reduce costs, shorten procurement timelines, and improve interoperability by pooling testing infrastructure and sharing performance data.

The initiative builds on Germany’s wider commitment to the RCH 155, following a $1.4-billion acquisition contract for 84 systems signed with Artec, a partnership between KNDS Germany and Rheinmetall. The overarching framework allows for the procurement of up to 500 units, opening the door for additional NATO and partner nations to join the program.

Installed on the Boxer 8×8 armored chassis, the RCH 155 combines high automation, rapid mobility, and long-range precision, firing up to eight rounds per minute while moving and traveling 700 kilometers without refueling. For the British Army, the system is intended to become the permanent Mobile Fires Platform, replacing stopgap artillery solutions and reinforcing long-term mechanized fire support capability.
