Romania has sealed a major 223-million-euro ($260 million) agreement with Turkey to acquire a state-of-the-art HISAR-class corvette, complete with crew training and a robust logistical support system. The deal forms a core element of Romania’s broader defense modernization efforts, aimed at boosting naval power and protecting critical maritime interests in the increasingly contested Black Sea region.

In a statement, the Romanian Ministry of National Defence confirmed that the contract ensures the vessel will be fully operational upon delivery, with comprehensive support for maintenance, training, and system integration. The procurement received strategic approval from the Homeland Defence Supreme Council in March 2025 and later secured unanimous backing from key parliamentary defense committees in September, underscoring its national security importance.

The HISAR corvette brings a versatile, multi-mission capability to Romania’s fleet. Weighing about 2,300 tons and stretching 99 meters in length, the ship is equipped for sophisticated air, surface, and subsurface combat roles. Its weapons package includes an OTO Melara 76 mm gun, RAM launchers, Mk 32 torpedo systems, and several remote-controlled weapon stations. The corvette’s advanced sensor suite—featuring 3D radar, sonar systems, and electronic warfare technology—supports high-precision tracking, threat detection, and network-centric operations.

Turkey’s HISAR-class vessels have been actively deployed across the Eastern Mediterranean, conducting high-risk maritime missions ranging from escort duties to anti-submarine warfare. These ships are regular participants in NATO’s Dynamic Manta exercises and have demonstrated strong interoperability with allied naval forces. Additionally, they have played a key role in safeguarding offshore energy platforms and keeping surveillance over major sea lanes, reinforcing their reputation as reliable and capable combat ships.
