A stand-in icebreaker ship has been delivered to the US Coast Guard to aid with the refurbishment of the service’s fleet of polar cutters. The main function of the MV Aiviq, which is being turned over by Offshore Service Vessels, is to keep the force in the Arctic until the new Polar Security Cutters of the service arrive in the 2030s.The marine corporation based in Louisiana was given the $125 million contract to acquire the commercially available system in November.
