“Herne,” an extra-large autonomous underwater vehicle (XLAUV) intended for military applications, has been successfully demonstrated by BAE Systems. The ship is built to support anti-submarine warfare, conduct clandestine surveillance operations, and monitor and safeguard underwater infrastructure. The company’s high-specification, autonomous military control system for naval surface and subsurface vehicles, Nautomate, powers it. The Herne XLAUV’s demonstrator version was made possible by a partnership between BAE and Cellula Robotics, a Canadian business. This allowed the project to go from basic idea to deployment and testing in just 11 months.
