The fourth Taigei-class diesel-electric submarine of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) has been put into service. Three years after the lead submarine, dubbed JS Taigei (“big whale”), was put into service in March 2022, Kawasaki Heavy Industries built the JS Raigei (“thunder whale”).By the 2030s, all eight of the proposed submarines should be in service.
