Thales and Navantia have formalized a new partnership to support the Royal Thai Navy’s fleet modernization, marking their first collaborative effort within Thailand. The agreement includes the installation of three Thales IFF systems on two Pattani-class patrol vessels and the HTMS Chang landing platform dock, with Navantia tasked with managing the Chang’s overall refurbishment.
The upgrade package centers on the TSA3520 interrogator and TSC4000 transponder, two proven IFF components used across a range of naval and aviation platforms. Once integrated with the vessels’ existing radar and combat management suites, the systems will improve the navy’s ability to distinguish friendly units from potential threats, delivering enhanced maritime situational awareness.
The project follows several recent defense agreements involving Thales and the Royal Thai Navy. Thales currently supplies multiple naval technologies to Thailand, including advanced sensors, mine-hunting systems, and fire-control solutions. The company also recently secured a contract to provide an integrated platform management system for the HTMS Chakri Naruebet aircraft carrier, modernizing propulsion control, electrical distribution, and onboard safety systems.
Navantia, meanwhile, has been working with Thailand on upgrades to the HTMS Chang since April. Under that contract, the Spanish shipbuilder will supply new combat management technology, surveillance systems, fire-control equipment, and additional modernization tools. Combined, these efforts highlight Thailand’s growing investment in next-generation naval capabilities and international defense partnerships.
