Thales has received its 100th order for the Combined Active-Passive Towed Array Sonar (CAPTAS), marking a significant achievement for the company’s anti-submarine warfare portfolio. The milestone order, placed by an undisclosed client, underscores the CAPTAS family’s proven performance and widespread adoption among global naval forces.
Designed for long-range detection, the CAPTAS sonar provides both active and passive coverage in a full 360-degree field. With detection ranges exceeding 60 kilometers, the system offers early warning and situational dominance by identifying submarines well before they approach critical maritime areas. This capability plays a vital role in maintaining maritime security and safeguarding strategic waters against stealth threats.
Used by 17 navies—including major NATO members—CAPTAS is known for its adaptability and interoperability with other systems. It can be fitted on vessels of various sizes, from under 1,000-ton ships to large surface combatants, as well as on unmanned surface vehicles. The system’s containerized mission module further enables fast integration and deployment during operational surges.
Thales has also focused on digital modernization of the CAPTAS suite, incorporating AI-based data analytics and enhanced user interfaces to simplify operations. The sonar integrates seamlessly with Thales’ wider sonar network—including Hull-Mounted Sonars, FLASH systems, and SonoFlash buoys—to create a cohesive maritime defense ecosystem. With its modular and cyber-secure design, CAPTAS ensures future adaptability and sustained effectiveness throughout its operational lifespan.
