The French Navy has already received orders for 14 RAPIDFire defense systems from the DGA. Two are actively deployed aboard the Jacques Chevallier fleet replenishment ship, which completed two long-duration missions with the Carrier Strike Group, including extensive live-fire exercises. Two additional systems were recently installed on the Jacques Stosskopf (BRF2), and a fifth will soon equip a new offshore patrol vessel.
RAPIDFire achieved official qualification in early 2025, ensuring compatibility with all current 40CT ammunition.
Advanced, Modular Defense
The RAPIDFire system, co-developed by Thales and KNDS France, is the first remotely operated 40mm turret with the CT40 gun. It features sophisticated targeting sensors and carries up to 140 ready-to-use rounds, enabling multiple target interceptions without reloading. The turret’s adaptive fire control ensures precision against evolving threats, including drones, aircraft, loitering munitions, and surface targets up to 4 km.
From Ships to Land-Based Defense
The RAPIDFire system’s modular design supports:
Semi-mobile ground units for fixed site defense.
Mobile vehicle-mounted versions to protect deployed assets, both being developed alongside the French Air and Space Force.
A3B Airburst Capability
The A3B airburst round, under development and expected to be operational by 2027, offers precision against aerial targets through directional tungsten sub-projectiles, enhancing RAPIDFire’s anti-air defense capabilities. A 2024 contract update funded its development and the first batch of 500 rounds.
