Thales and Boreal Develop Rapid-Deploy Long-Range Loitering Munition for France and NATO
A new long-range loitering munition (MTO-LP) is under development to meet the evolving needs of French and NATO forces. With a baseline range of several hundred kilometres and the potential for extension, this system can be prepared for launch by two operators in less than 30 minutes. Up to ten munitions can be launched concurrently for coordinated missions. The platform-agnostic design ensures easy adaptation across a range of scenarios while reducing storage, transportation, and operational logistics in the field.

The system is tailored for long-range target engagements and will initially reach operational readiness by 2026, with 1,000 warheads slated for annual production. Future upgrades planned for 2027 will introduce countermeasure capabilities, more complex mission profiles, and new warhead variants. The first flight demonstrations are planned for summer 2025.

The partnership between Thales and Boreal will strengthen France’s defence industrial capabilities, support Boreal’s production scale-up, and pave the way for additional collaboration with Belgium’s defence sector.
