Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense has officially announced a major upgrade to its artillery forces, approving the procurement of 168 M109A7 155mm self-propelled howitzers from the United States—up from the previously planned 40 units. This purchase is intended to fully replace Taiwan’s outdated artillery systems. The deal also includes an unspecified number of M992A3 ammunition supply vehicles, which utilize the same modern chassis as the M109A7, offering improved logistical and operational efficiency. Valued at over NT$90 billion (roughly $2.75 billion USD), this acquisition represents one of Taiwan’s largest-ever investments in ground combat capabilities. The M109A7, developed under the U.S. Army’s Paladin Integrated Management program, boasts a new chassis, digital fire control systems, enhanced crew protection, and greater mobility—giving Taiwan’s forces a significant edge in high-threat scenarios. Its integration with advanced artillery and logistics systems is expected to provide sustained firepower support in prolonged operations.
