Navantia has entered into a strategic partnership with Alpha Unmanned Systems to jointly develop and integrate ship-launched unmanned aerial systems for next-generation naval applications. The agreement, formalized through a memorandum of understanding, outlines a collaborative framework that merges Navantia’s naval engineering experience with Alpha’s proven drone technologies to deliver enhanced capabilities to global defense clients.
Central to the partnership is the evaluation of Alpha’s A900 unmanned helicopter, a maritime UAV engineered for takeoff and landing on moving vessels. Designed to endure challenging sea states and weather conditions, the A900 will be tested for compatibility with Navantia’s ship designs and integrated command systems, expanding the operational envelope of future surface combatants and patrol vessels.
The A900 drone is optimized for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions at sea, capable of carrying multiple sensor payloads, including EO/IR cameras, maritime radar, and communication relay systems. Already fielded by 12 countries, the A900 has supported a range of security and defense missions—from Spain’s Mediterranean border patrols to the Greek Coast Guard’s coastal surveillance efforts.
In addition, Indonesia conducted trials of the A900 in 2024 for coastal and artillery defense applications, signaling its increasing relevance in multi-domain maritime operations. Through this partnership, Navantia and Alpha aim to expand Spain’s footprint in the global naval drone sector and deliver innovative solutions aligned with the growing demand for unmanned systems in modern naval warfare.
