Spain has authorized a new procurement plan tasking Navantia with the design and construction of two Buques de Acción Marítima (BAM) offshore patrol vessels for the Spanish Navy. These ships will complement the six BAM-class vessels already deployed, significantly enhancing Spain’s maritime surveillance and security capacity.

The initiative carries a budget of 716 million euros ($847 million). Compared to earlier BAM ships, the new vessels will benefit from several upgrades, including a state-of-the-art combat system, a modern platform management system, and improved communication and navigation technology. Engineering will start once contracts are signed, and shipbuilding is expected to launch in the first half of 2027.

The ships will also feature cutting-edge technologies such as unmanned vehicles, advanced cybersecurity solutions, and new functional areas including expanded medical facilities and upgraded crew accommodations. These enhancements are designed to address both operational demands and the well-being of sailors.

Construction will take place at Navantia’s Puerto Real facilities, a site known for its high automation levels and technological sophistication. For the engineering phase, Navantia will employ digital solutions from its ELCANO program, developed with Siemens, to optimize efficiency and accuracy throughout the design and build process.
