The Swedish government has awarded Saab a 2.1-billion-krona ($220 million) contract for advanced sensors and a command-and-control suite to bolster the army’s ground-based air defense at the brigade level. The order further increases Sweden’s air defense resilience as it strengthens its defenses within the Nordic region.

Included in the procurement are the Giraffe 1X short-range radar and the LSS Lv C2 command-and-control system, along with weapon-system integration services, technical assessments, and spare components. Saab will also undertake an integration analysis aimed at incorporating its AMB medium-range radar into the existing air defense structure for expanded airborne threat detection.

The newly ordered systems are expected to be delivered between 2027 and 2028. The compact Giraffe 1X 3D radar, which Sweden has previously procured, offers 360-degree coverage and is capable of detecting ultra-small targets—reportedly as tiny as a milk carton—at distances up to 4 kilometers. Its lightweight construction, under 150 kilograms, allows for flexible deployment on mobile, fixed, or transportable platforms.

The LSS Lv C2 system functions as the mission coordination hub, supporting real-time information exchange, synchronized target engagement, and tactical planning. Together, the upgrades will improve Sweden’s ability to counter a broad spectrum of threats, particularly drones, cruise missiles, and low-signature aerial platforms.
