Russia is expected to assist North Korea in creating a domestic version of Iran’s Shahed-series loitering drones. These kamikaze munitions, used heavily in Ukraine, offer long-range precision strike capability and are inexpensive to mass produce, making them ideal for unconventional warfare.
Ukrainian defense official Kyrylo Budanov highlighted that the proliferation of such technology to North Korea could severely destabilize security across the Korean Peninsula. He warned that it might encourage more provocative behavior from Pyongyang, prompting countermeasures by South Korea, Japan, and allied forces.
Russia’s strategic partnership with North Korea is deepening beyond weapons sales. It now includes industrial collaboration, military technology transfers, and possible personnel deployments. This synergy is giving both countries a pathway to resist international sanctions while simultaneously building up their war-fighting capabilities.
