The Danish government has selected Rheinmetall to supply ammunition for a range of ground combat and air defense platforms under a seven-year framework contract valued at several hundred million euros. The agreement supports Denmark’s efforts to enhance the firepower and readiness of its armored forces and short-range air defense units.

Under the contract, Rheinmetall will deliver a mix of medium- and large-caliber ammunition, including 120mm rounds for main battle tanks and 155mm artillery munitions. Initial procurement focuses on medium-caliber ammunition, with high five-digit quantities of 30×173mm and 35×228mm cartridges ordered at a value in the low three-digit million-euro range.

The acquisition of 30×173mm rounds follows Denmark’s 2024 procurement of Rheinmetall’s Skyranger 30 mobile air defense system. Designed to counter drones and other fast, low-flying threats, Skyranger 30 combines a 30mm cannon, missile systems, and integrated sensors, using programmable airburst ammunition for enhanced effectiveness. The 35×228mm cartridges will be used by Denmark’s CV9035 infantry fighting vehicles, armed with the Bushmaster III 35mm cannon.

Denmark has also expanded its CV90 fleet through a recent order for 44 additional vehicles from BAE Systems, supplementing a 2024 order for 115 units. As part of the same framework contract, Rheinmetall will deliver more than 1,000 rounds of 120mm kinetic-energy ammunition for main battle tanks, with the tank ammunition segment valued in the high single-digit million-euro range.
