Germany is accelerating its military buildup with a new order placed with Rheinmetall for large quantities of 120mm tank ammunition. Valued at several hundred million euros, the latest procurement adds a substantial volume of combat and training rounds to the Bundeswehr’s ammunition reserves. The move supports Berlin’s ongoing initiative to enhance force readiness as Europe faces heightened geopolitical instability.
This purchase stems from the Bundeswehr’s decision in July 2023 to extend Rheinmetall’s ammunition framework agreement and raise its ceiling to around four billion euros ($4.6 billion). Under the extended contract, Germany can acquire hundreds of thousands of 120mm x 570 cartridges used by the Leopard 2 main battle tank. The framework runs until 2030, ensuring a steady supply of essential munitions for Germany’s armored units.
Rheinmetall has secured a wide range of defense contracts as part of Germany’s extensive modernization program. Among the most high-profile is the procurement of Lynx KF41 infantry fighting vehicles, intended to overhaul the German Army’s aging mechanized fleet. Germany has also tapped the company for its Skyranger 30 air-defense system, a turreted solution designed to counter drones, small aircraft, and other low-altitude threats.
In addition to armored and air-defense upgrades, Berlin has instructed Rheinmetall to deliver new 155mm artillery ammunition, including long-range variants essential for replenishing stocks sent to Ukraine. The defense firm has also received funding for HX logistics trucks, enhancements to Puma infantry fighting vehicles, and cutting-edge soldier-system technologies. Collectively, these contracts underline Germany’s renewed emphasis on capability development and its strategic role within NATO.
