German defense contractor Rheinmetall has been awarded a multi-hundred-million-euro contract to supply advanced laser-light modules for the Bundeswehr, supporting the nationwide rollout of Germany’s next-generation assault rifle. The deal was unlocked following parliamentary budget approval, activating the first binding order under a long-term framework agreement concluded in 2021.
The contract calls for the delivery of LLM-VarioRay systems over the next seven years, with provisions allowing Germany to place follow-on orders as force modernization progresses. Manufacturing will take place at Rheinmetall Soldier Electronics’ Stockach facility, providing sustained industrial capacity as the Bundeswehr upgrades infantry equipment across multiple units.
The LLM-VarioRay is designed to enhance soldier effectiveness by combining white light, visible laser, infrared laser, and infrared illumination in a lightweight, rifle-mounted package. Optimized for both conventional and night operations, the system supports target acquisition, identification, and coordination in complex combat environments.
Integrated into the Future Soldier – Extended System, the laser-light module plays a key role in connecting individual soldiers to broader sensor and command networks. Beyond Germany, the system is already operational with allied forces, including the British Army’s Laser-Light-Module MK3 and Switzerland’s Laser-Light-Module 19, reinforcing Rheinmetall’s position as a leading supplier of modern infantry electronics in Europe.
