The Australian government has expanded its Evolved Cape-class patrol vessel program after contracting Austal to build two additional boats for the Australian Border Force. The AUD 135 million investment increases the total number of vessels on order to 14, reinforcing Australia’s long-term maritime security strategy.

The contract follows the recent handover of ADV Cape Spencer (P225), the ninth vessel in the series, delivered in September. Australia first launched the Evolved Cape program in 2020 to enhance offshore patrol, border protection, and support operations for the Royal Australian Navy and other maritime agencies.

Each 58-meter Evolved Cape-class vessel is designed for endurance and operational flexibility, with accommodation for 32 crew members. The patrol boats are powered by two Caterpillar 3516C diesel engines, generating 6,770 horsepower, and feature twin-shaft propulsion and a bow thruster for improved handling.

Capable of reaching 26 knots, the vessels offer a maximum range of 4,000 nautical miles, supporting long-duration patrol missions across Australia’s vast maritime approaches. Armament options include remote weapon stations in the 20–30 mm range or 12.7 mm machine guns, enabling adaptable response capabilities for border enforcement and maritime security operations.
