In a major modernization step, the Polish Navy has launched its first of two new SIGINT ships, being developed by Saab of Sweden under the Delfin program. These vessels will replace two aging Project 863 Moma-class intelligence ships, in service since the mid-1970s.

The new ship, ORP Jerzy Różycki, honors the WWII-era mathematician who cracked the Enigma code. It is designed to intercept a broad range of maritime electronic signals from enemy vessels and naval bases, while also conducting hydroacoustic reconnaissance against underwater threats — including unmanned vehicles.

A €620 million ($730 million) deal was signed with Saab in 2022, with deliveries expected by 2027. Construction is taking place at Remontowa Shipbuilding in Gdansk, with the two ships’ construction initiated in April and November of 2023.
