AeroVironment has announced a major capability boost for its Puma Long Endurance (LE) drone, enabling the system to withstand and operate during GPS jamming attacks. With modern battlefields increasingly contested by electronic warfare tools, the new feature positions Puma LE for more secure tactical missions and ISR operations.

The upgrade centers around a newly installed Visual Navigation System, designed to guide the aircraft even when satellite-based data is compromised. The solution works as a backup navigation method, allowing the drone to continue flight operations without depending on external GPS signals, a shift that addresses one of the critical vulnerabilities in unmanned aviation.

The VNS makes use of terrain recognition technology supported by downward-facing optical sensors, live image processing, onboard computing hardware, and automated mapping algorithms. These elements enable the drone to determine its flight direction and location using ground reference points captured in real time.

By adding this sensor-driven navigation method, AeroVironment aims to expand mission flexibility and ensure operators can deploy the Puma LE in GPS-restricted locations or during active electronic interference. The upgrade builds further on the company’s strategy of preparing unmanned systems for contested operational environments.
