A Ukrainian company, Fold, is pioneering a new FPV drone concept that trades radio links for fiber-optic control, enabling flights of up to 100 kilometers (62 miles). The system is expected to far surpass the range of current frontline drones.

The project adapts existing quadcopter-style FPV drones, which are typically low-cost and widely available on the commercial market. Despite their modest price, these drones can carry lethal charges capable of neutralizing heavily armored vehicles, making them an attractive option for combat use.

Fold’s innovation lies in eliminating radio transmission, a common vulnerability exploited by electronic jamming systems. Instead, the drone uses a reel of fiber-optic cable that tethers it to its operator, maintaining secure, interference-free communication.

With this design, Ukraine could significantly increase the survivability and effectiveness of FPV drones in high-threat environments. The system promises both greater range and resistance to electronic warfare, potentially reshaping tactical drone use in the ongoing conflict.
