MBDA has secured a new development contract to supply the Italian Army with a very short-range air defence (VSHORAD) system, announced during the ongoing Paris Air Show (June 16-20, 2025) at Le Bourget. As part of the announcement, MBDA unveiled the system’s central missile, named FULGUR, specifically developed to meet the operational demands of the Italian Army.
FULGUR is a highly mobile, supersonic, fire-and-forget missile designed for round-the-clock, all-weather missions. Its advanced seeker with image processing capabilities enables it to effectively engage threats such as drones, helicopters, and fighter jets. The system adheres to NATO standards, with initial deliveries of the missile and portable launcher expected by early 2028.
The new missile will also be integrated into SKY WARDEN, MBDA’s flagship modular counter-UAS system. FULGUR’s inclusion will further solidify MBDA’s role in providing scalable, European multi-layered air defence solutions, ranging from very short-range protection to ballistic and hypersonic missile defence.
FULGUR is engineered for easy vehicle integration on platforms like the IDV VTLM2 with Leonardo turrets, various 8×8 configurations, and future armoured vehicles equipped with automated turret systems. Additionally, the missile is compatible with air launch operations, including helicopter deployment, enhancing its tactical flexibility.
