The French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) has selected MBDA to lead the development and production of a new long-range one-way attack UAV, aimed at strengthening France’s ability to conduct saturation strikes against advanced air defense systems. Known as the One-Way Effector (OWE), the drone was revealed in June 2025 and is expected to be operational with French forces by 2027.

Designed in partnership with Aviation Design and other French industrial players, the OWE reflects a strategic shift toward cost-effective mass strike systems suitable for peer-level conflict. MBDA has stated that baseline production will begin at roughly 100 units per year, while the manufacturing architecture has been deliberately structured to enable rapid surge production exceeding 1,000 units per month if required.

The OWE features a low-observable, wing-form airframe measuring 3.3 meters across and armed with a 40-kilogram high-explosive payload. With a reported operational range of over 500 kilometers and a maximum speed approaching 400 km/h, the drone is intended to operate as a force-multiplier, compelling enemy air defenses to engage and reveal their positions to other long-range precision weapons.

French officials and MBDA executives have pointed to the Ukraine war as a key influence on the program, particularly the demonstrated effectiveness of large numbers of expendable strike drones in overwhelming air defense networks. Reflecting this urgency, the OWE initiative has moved at exceptional speed, progressing from concept announcement to test firing and contract award in under twelve months, underscoring France’s intent to rapidly rebuild long-range strike capacity.
