Thales has secured its first global export order for the HF XL TRC 3900 land-based radio system, marking a breakthrough in the company’s advanced communications portfolio. Partnering with Malaysia’s Advanced Defence Systems, the contract covers the delivery of more than 100 vehicle-mounted HF XL stations, complete with antennas, amplifiers, and radios.
Designed for resilient long-distance communication, the HF XL offers Malaysia a significant technological boost in both remote and urban defense operations. Thales reports that the system provides around ten times the data throughput of current HF radios, making it ideal for transmitting secure voice, images, and even video files. It is especially effective in tropical environments, such as Malaysia’s dense jungle terrain, where conventional communication systems often struggle.
The technology also ensures connectivity in areas with poor or no satellite coverage. Its resistance to jamming and cost-effective operation further strengthen its suitability for modern defense missions. Over the past 25 years, Thales has already delivered over 10,000 radios to the Malaysian Army, underlining a long-standing defense partnership.
The TRC 3900 series offers multiple power levels, with the 20-watt manpack providing coverage up to 1,000 kilometers. Higher-powered 400-watt and 1-kilowatt models extend communication capabilities to as far as 5,000 kilometers, enabling command posts to maintain direct links with headquarters and allied forces. These systems will enhance Malaysia’s ability to conduct secure, large-scale, and flexible defense operations well into the future.
