Denmark has chosen Lockheed Martin’s TPY-4 long-range air surveillance radar to provide expanded airspace coverage across key northern territories, including Skagen, Bornholm, and the Faroe Islands. The acquisition aims to bolster the Royal Danish Air Force’s air defense and early-warning capabilities while contributing to NATO’s wider air monitoring network.

The agreement calls for the delivery of three TPY-4 radar units, with provisions for a fourth system, offering detection ranges of up to 1,000 kilometers. This capability allows Denmark to monitor airspace across the vital North Atlantic and Nordic regions, particularly between Iceland, Norway, and the UK, enhancing allied situational awareness.

To support the procurement, Denmark’s parliament has approved 1.5 billion kroner in funding, reflecting Copenhagen’s broader strategy to strengthen Arctic defense infrastructure and surveillance capacity. The TPY-4 radars are designed for persistent, wide-area air surveillance, enabling continuous tracking of potential airborne threats in both peacetime and heightened security conditions.

Once operational, radar sites in Skagen and Bornholm will help track Russian military aircraft activity in the Baltic Sea, while the Faroe Islands installation will oversee airspace linking major NATO partners in the North Atlantic. The deployment reinforces Denmark’s strategic position as a key contributor to NATO air defense and regional security in an increasingly contested environment.
