Lithuania has committed €240 million ($278 million) to expand and modernize its Pabradė Training Area, significantly improving infrastructure used by US rotational forces. The project includes upgraded barracks, refurbished dining and fitness facilities, and a long-term logistics support system. Officials also unveiled a new “Soldier Center,” named in memory of four US troops who lost their lives earlier this year during a training accident.

The enhancements are designed to support year-round multinational operations and boost NATO’s overall readiness in the Baltic region. By taking on full responsibility for the operational expenses of hosting US forces, Lithuania is reducing the logistical load on the US military while ensuring sustained support for over 1,000 American troops currently stationed in rotation. These improvements create an environment where US and Lithuanian forces can train, operate, and deploy together more effectively.

This investment comes amid expanding bilateral defense cooperation. Major joint exercises—including Iron Wolf 2025, featuring 3,700 troops and 700 vehicles, and BALTOPS 2025, which included HIMARS rocket artillery live-fire drills conducted with US Marines—highlight Lithuania’s growing focus on interoperability and advanced fire capabilities. These activities are strengthening the nation’s defense posture and reinforcing NATO’s strategic presence along the eastern flank.
