The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense has awarded KNDS Deutschland a contract for the procurement of 12 Leguan bridge layer systems, aimed at improving armored unit mobility and engineering support across the battlefield. The systems will enhance Lithuania’s ability to rapidly overcome natural and man-made obstacles during high-intensity operations.

The contract, worth 210 million euros, includes a full lifecycle support package covering spare parts supply, crew and maintainer training programs, simulators, and technical documentation. These measures are intended to accelerate integration of the systems and ensure sustained operational effectiveness.

Each Leguan platform will be delivered with three bridge modules, comprising two 14-meter spans and one 26-meter span, all certified to meet MLC 80 standards. This load capacity allows the system to support the movement of heavy tracked and wheeled military vehicles, including modern main battle tanks weighing more than 70 tons.

Based on the Leopard 2 chassis, the Leguan bridge layer can be operated by a two-member crew and deploy a bridge over gaps of up to 25 meters in under six minutes, even under combat conditions. The system is already fielded or being procured by 22 countries worldwide, underscoring its role as a proven armored engineering solution. KNDS’ previous Leguan order was announced in December, when Denmark selected the system for its armed forces.
