Japan is in discussions with Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) regarding the potential purchase of the K-RACER drone to enhance its military logistics capabilities.
According to a spokesperson from KHI speaking to Australian Defence Magazine, the interest was sparked by a successful 2024 demonstration where the drone autonomously handled cargo loading and unloading.
Following that, KHI has reportedly engaged in several meetings with Japan’s Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency and various units of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF).
The K-RACER is a rotorcraft-style drone capable of transporting up to 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of cargo at altitudes of up to 3,000 meters (9,842 feet), making it well-suited for Japan’s rugged, mountainous regions.
It is powered by the same 998cc four-cylinder engine found in Kawasaki’s Ninja H2R high-performance motorcycle and features a seven-meter (23-foot) airframe with a foldable tail, allowing it to be stored in standard 20- or 40-foot shipping containers.
