Leonardo has officially launched its Lionfish 30 remote-controlled turret, a next-generation naval defense system designed with artificial intelligence to improve accuracy, targeting speed, and crew protection. The weapon represents a significant advancement in the Italian Navy’s modernization efforts, emphasizing automation and reduced human intervention in high-risk maritime missions.
The system’s main weapon is the X-GUN, an electrically powered, dual-feed cannon chambered in 30×173mm, engineered entirely free of ITAR restrictions to simplify international sales. The gun can hold over 200 rounds ready for action across two ammunition boxes, offering sustained fire capability. It is compatible with multiple 30mm ammunition types, including airburst munitions under development by KNDS, enabling it to counter both conventional and asymmetric threats effectively.
For precision targeting, the Lionfish 30 integrates the JANUS-D electro-optical director, combining daylight and infrared sensors with a laser rangefinder. This advanced sighting system can identify and track targets up to 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), ensuring high accuracy during day or night operations.
With its modular design, smart fire-control algorithms, and all-electric operation, Leonardo’s Lionfish 30 turret offers a lightweight, low-maintenance, and AI-optimized solution ideal for modern naval platforms, reinforcing the Italian Navy’s strategic shift toward digitally enhanced maritime defense.
