Indonesia has officially launched KRI Balaputradewa-322, marking the debut of the nation’s first locally constructed Arrowhead 140-class frigate and a significant milestone in domestic naval shipbuilding. The program represents a strategic effort to modernize the Indonesian Navy while reducing reliance on foreign-built warships.

Built at PT PAL Indonesia in Surabaya, the frigate measures 140 meters long and nearly 20 meters wide, with a standard displacement of around 6,000 tons. Powered by a CODAD propulsion system, the vessel can achieve speeds of up to 28 knots, supporting high-end maritime operations across Indonesia’s vast archipelagic waters.

KRI Balaputradewa-322 is designed as a multi-role combatant, capable of conducting air defense, surface warfare, and anti-submarine missions. Its primary strike capability comes from a 64-cell vertical launch system, complemented by 76mm naval guns for surface engagements and a 35mm CIWS for last-ditch defense against missiles and unmanned aerial threats.

Named after Balaputradewa, a 9th-century ruler of the Srivijaya Empire, the frigate accommodates 143 crew members, with capacity to expand to 160 personnel. While based on a design licensed from Babcock International, the ship’s local construction highlights Indonesia’s ambition to build a self-sustaining naval defense ecosystem, reinforcing maritime deterrence and regional security.
