India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in coordination with the Indian Navy, has successfully test-fired an indigenously developed underwater mine.
Named the Multi-Influence Ground Mine, the weapon is intended to bolster the Navy’s ability to target advanced stealth vessels and submarines.
Equipped with advanced sensors, the mine can detect acoustic, magnetic, pressure, and underwater electric potential or extra-low frequency electric field signals produced by naval targets.
Weighing 1,000 kilograms (2,205 pounds) and powered by a lithium-thionyl chloride battery, it can be launched from ships, submarines, and coastal surveillance or patrol platforms.
The mine was developed by DRDO’s Naval Science & Technological Laboratory, with contributions from the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory and Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory.
Its production is being handled by Bharat Dynamics Limited and Apollo Microsystems Limited.
