HD Hyundai Heavy Industries said that it has begun building the final of three next-generation Aegis destroyers, which are a component of the Korean Air and Missile Defense (KAMD) system in South Korea.Officials from the Defense Rapid Acquisition Technology Research Institute, the Defense Agency for Technology and Quality (DTaQ), and the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) attended the third ship’s groundbreaking ceremony at the company’s Ulsan headquarters. It is anticipated that the Republic of Korea Navy will get this last destroyer by the end of 2027.With major improvements over the first-generation Sejong the Great-class, such as better anti-submarine warfare (ASW) performance and increased ballistic missile interception capabilities, the new class of destroyers will be positioned as important assets in South Korea’s maritime defense strategy.
