German shipbuilder Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has entered into collaborations with multiple Indian defense companies aimed at co-developing naval weapons and anti-submarine warfare capabilities. The agreements represent a significant milestone in India’s efforts to modernize its naval forces while strengthening domestic defense production.
The deals complement India’s broader maritime strategy, which involves investing in shipbuilding infrastructure, port capacity, and defense-related industries under the government’s flagship “Make in India” initiative. Introduced in 2014, the program seeks to transform India into a leading global hub for advanced manufacturing while ensuring strategic self-reliance in defense.
Among the agreements, TKMS and VEM Technologies have signed a memorandum of understanding to work on the development and upgrade of heavyweight torpedoes. Atlas Elektronik, a TKMS subsidiary, will provide specialized expertise from Germany, while VEM will lead the integration and testing process domestically. TKMS has also signaled its interest in engaging with India’s P75(I) submarine program and establishing new production facilities to support both Indian requirements and international export opportunities.
