Germany has placed a €1.2-billion order for 84 RCH 155 wheeled howitzers, reinforcing efforts to modernize its artillery units with high-mobility, long-range firepower. The contract was awarded to Artec, a joint venture between KNDS Germany and Rheinmetall, and forms part of a wider acquisition strategy for next-generation artillery systems.
The purchase falls under a multi-nation framework agreement that allows for the procurement of up to 500 RCH 155 platforms, potentially extending adoption across allied forces. As part of the deal, Rheinmetall will deliver the gun modules, electrical systems, and mission software, while Artec will manage vehicle integration, training equipment, and long-term support. Production deliveries are set to run from 2027 through 2029.
The RCH 155 pairs an automated 155mm artillery system with the Boxer 8×8 armored chassis, offering the ability to fire accurately at targets up to 40 km away, even while maneuvering. The design emphasizes speed, survivability, and precision, enabling rapid deployment and high operational tempo in modern combat environments.
With a crew of only two, the system significantly reduces manpower requirements while maintaining combat effectiveness. The RCH 155 has already gained international attention, with Ukraine ordering 54 units, Switzerland selecting it to replace legacy artillery, and the UK and Germany signing a cooperation agreement to explore British adoption—highlighting the platform’s growing role in European and NATO artillery modernization.
