Indonesia plans to modernize the former Italian Navy aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi after acquiring it as a grant from Italy. Local shipyards and defense firms will participate in upgrading the vessel to meet Indonesian naval requirements. Built by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, the 180-meter ship served Italy from 1985 to 2024 and supports short take-off and vertical landing aircraft and helicopters. Once modernized, the vessel is expected to serve as an operational command ship and could support missions ranging from humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to drone deployment and maritime security operations.
