General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), the pioneer behind platforms such as the Predator® and the YFQ-42A Collaborative Combat Aircraft, has introduced a compact uncrewed launched effect called PELE, designed for global defense and aerospace applications.
PELE, which stands for Precision Exportable Launched Effect, is inspired by the Hawaiian goddess Pele, symbolizing natural strength and power. This small, semi-autonomous, propeller-driven unmanned system is engineered to support its mothership by extending surveillance, reconnaissance, and operational reach in contested or complex scenarios. PELE features an 11-foot wingspan, a 16-horsepower engine, and can be deployed from both airborne and ground-based launch systems.
Optimized for seamless integration with the MQ-9B SkyGuardian®, a leading multi-mission, medium-altitude, long-endurance UAV, PELE is equipped with an electro-optical infrared sensor for full-motion video and can carry additional mission-specific payloads within its internal storage.
For instance, the MQ-9B may deploy PELE along contested airspace to discreetly collect intelligence, identify hostile deployments, and pinpoint anti-air defenses. PELE is 9 feet long, has a maximum gross takeoff weight of 250 pounds, can operate for up to 7 hours, and offers a reach of 500 nautical miles.
