The French defense industry has introduced what could become a defining capability for future battlefield operations with the launch of MUTANT XL, a hybrid precision-strike drone developed through a partnership between MBDA and Delair. The system integrates MBDA’s advanced missile technologies with Delair’s unmanned aircraft design, creating a next-generation loitering munition capable of high maneuverability, controlled engagement, and mission adaptability. The collaboration reflects a rising demand for flexible strike systems that combine the autonomy of drones with the lethality of guided missiles.

MUTANT XL is built around a man-in-the-loop architecture, giving human operators direct oversight from the moment the system leaves its launcher until it reaches the target. This ensures precise engagement and enhances operational safety, particularly in complex or densely populated combat zones. According to MBDA, the system leverages the heritage of the AKERON missile line, providing proven anti-tank capabilities and reliable performance in adverse weather and high-interference conditions.

Delair’s role strengthens the system’s flight performance and adaptability. Drawing on its experience with defense-specific UAVs and commercial drone platforms, the company has helped engineer a munition that can maneuver like a drone while delivering the punch of a guided missile. This combination makes MUTANT XL a compelling option for the French Armed Forces, offering a modular and scalable solution adaptable to numerous operational requirements, from deep-strike missions to rapid-response engagements.

The project forms a key pillar of the French military’s Larinae program, an initiative aimed at modernizing ground-based weapon systems and advancing unmanned combat capabilities. Larinae concentrates on precision-guided munitions capable of defeating armored vehicles at ranges up to 50 kilometers, while also supporting national innovation in drone swarms, long-range strike technologies, and battlefield autonomy. MUTANT XL’s first public appearance at the 2025 Defense Innovation Forum in Paris highlights its role as one of France’s most promising new-generation strike systems.
