The first B61-13 gravity bomb production unit has been completed significantly ahead of schedule, marking a key success for Sandia National Laboratories and the U.S. nuclear security program. As the lead designer for the nonnuclear components, Sandia based much of the B61-13’s design on the proven B61-12 model, which concluded production in late 2024.
Assembly was finalized at the Pantex Plant in May, only 13 months after Congress authorized funding. Sandia’s early feasibility studies, which began in 2022, coupled with fast-tracked hardware deliveries from the Y-12 National Security Complex and the Kansas City National Security Campus, played a vital role in this expedited process.
Experienced personnel from the B61-12 program transitioned to the B61-13 project, contributing their expertise and enabling the team to push delivery boundaries through innovation and efficient program execution.
The Department of Energy’s Secretary Chris Wright participated in the official diamond stamping ceremony at Pantex, certifying the unit’s readiness for integration into the nuclear stockpile. The B61-13 will provide a higher yield option while maintaining the safety, security, and accuracy advancements introduced with the B61-12. The total number of deployed weapons will remain consistent, as the B61-13’s production will be balanced by reducing the quantity of B61-12 units. The program will now focus on final design reviews and preparations for full-rate manufacturing.
