Italian defense firm Fincantieri has been awarded a deal to build two new PPA-class multipurpose patrol ships for the Italian Navy, taking over production of hulls that were originally intended for Indonesia.

Under the oversight of the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation, Fincantieri will act as the prime contractor, with Leonardo contributing to the project. The vessels, configured as “light plus” variants, are slated for delivery in 2029 and 2030. Assembly will be carried out at the company’s Riva Trigoso and Muggiano shipyards.

The program is valued at around 700 million euros ($810 million), including previously completed construction efforts for the Indonesian version.
