Electro Optic Systems (EOS) has been selected by Hanwha Defence Australia to supply its R400 Remote Weapon Systems for the Australian Army’s LAND 400 Phase 3 Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) program. The contract, valued at 108 million Australian dollars ($71 million), spans several years and includes comprehensive training, spares, and technical documentation.
EOS will integrate its next-generation R400 RWS onto Hanwha’s AS21 Redback IFV, providing enhanced firepower and precision to the platform. Production will be conducted at EOS’ Canberra manufacturing facility, with contributions from a domestic supply network involving more than 100 Australian defense firms, bolstering the nation’s sovereign manufacturing capabilities.
Designed for accuracy and modularity, the R400 system features a 30mm cannon capable of engaging targets at up to 2,000 meters. Its flexible configuration allows single or dual-weapon setups, supporting an array of payloads including machine guns, grenade launchers, and anti-tank guided missiles. The weapon station’s plug-and-play architecture also ensures compatibility with other EOS systems for varied mission profiles.
The Redback IFV, selected in 2023 over competitors such as Rheinmetall’s KF41 Lynx, will replace Australia’s long-serving M113AS4 armored personnel carriers. The $4-billion Australian dollar ($2.63-billion) program includes the procurement of 129 Redbacks, with vehicle production based in Australia and deliveries expected to begin in 2027. Hanwha will also provide sustainment and training support through the final handover phase in 2029.
